Why Are Circles Round?
Why Are Circles Round?

They are too cool to be square!

Albina recently rolled some pretty cool circles! We rolled the following materials:

Plate 2” THICK X 45¾” WIDE T304 S/S. Rolled to a full circle at a 41.5” outside diameter.
Plate 2½” THICK X 50½” WIDE T304 S/S. Rolled to a full circle at a 58.5” outside diameter.

For future reference, our plate rolls have the following capacities:

*Plate: 2-1/2" plate up to 10'0" in width
*Flat Bar the Easy Way: Any thickness and size thru 4" x 22"
*section is dependent on thickness to width

Steel Solutions Help Launch Seattle's Space Needle Into the Future

Albina Co. Inc. bent the spiral staircases at the newly renovated Space Needle in Seattle, Washington. The Space Needle's rotating glass floor, dubbed "The Loupe", is located just below the open-air observation deck and Albina Co., Inc. was the steel bender/roller for the custom spiral staircases connecting the two areas. The stair centilevers off concealed supports, so the staircase appears to float above the glass floor below thus creating a very unique experience for the visitors.

Albina Co., Inc. bent 1" thick x 13 ¼" wide A572 GR 50 to yield three 180" pieces and three 144" pieces of rolled plate and 1" thick x 10-13/16" wide A572 GR 50 to yield one 80" piece of rolled plate. We also bent tube steel 10" x 6" x .625" WALL A500 GR B to a 11’ 6” inside plan view radius (the easy way).

More detailed information on the project can be found in the May 2022 Issue of Modern Steel

1" THICK A572 GR 50 PLATE IMPORT MATERIAL
Phase 1: Spiral roll the easy way a total of 80 pcs.

1" THICK A572 GR 50 PLATE - 2" THICK A572 GR 50 PLATE
Phase 2: Bevel, Roll and Trim a total of 20+ pcs

1½" SCH40 T304 S/S #4 FINISH
Phase 3: Spiral roll 37 pcs of handrail.

We currently have three plate rolls in our facility ranging from small to large capacity. We just received a new CNC plate roll and have purchased another medium capacity plate roll to arrive in November. Contact us for all of your plate rolling needs!

Albina Co., Inc., was lucky enough to be the bender/roller for a beautiful spiral staircase that graces the lobby of one of the major tech companies headquartered in San Jose, California. Albina bent the following materials for the project:

Tube Steel 3" X 3" X .375" WALL A500 GR B
Channel C15 X 40# A572-50
3/8" THICK X 24" WIDE CORTEN PLATE
¼" THICK X 77¾" WIDE CORTEN PLATE
¼" THICK X 29½" WIDE CORTEN PLATE

The Inside stringer for the staircase was rolled to a 26’-11” radius and the outside stringer was rolled to a 32’-3” radius.

Rolling Along & Staying Strong: Our Variable Axis Plate Roll is Strong, Reliable & Efficient
Rolling Along & Staying Strong: Our Variable Axis Plate Roll is Strong, Reliable & Efficient

Boy, has it been a long time since we have heard words like "solid, efficient and reliable" used, instead of words like "uncertain, unexpected, and unknown" that have been used so often these last few months in our country. Well, we are here to share with you that our variable axis plate rolling machine has drastically increased our capacity for plate rolling and we are excited about the opportunity to bid your plate rolling needs!
DAVI recently contacted us to conduct an interview related to our experience with both the MCP Big Angle Roll and the MAV Variable Axis Plate Roll. Click here to read "Face to Face With A Master Bender." Watch the video below to learn more and to see the MAV in action!

The overall capacity for standard A36 plate is 10 ft x 2½” thick. For higher yield material (example 60 ksi) the machine can pre-bend and roll the following examples:

  1. 10 ft x 1 5/8″ thick to a 61″ outside diameter.
  2. 9 ft x 1 3/4″ thick to a 96″ outside diameter.
  3. 10 ft x 3/4″ thick to a 30″ inside diameter.

We were thrilled to be an integral part of reconstructing Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. Hayward Field is the world-class home to @OregonTF. Albina created the curved steel diaphragm used to support the roof structure and provided various bent materials to help construct the landmark tower at the northeast corner of the facility. Designers wanted to create a structure that was open and airy, allowing spectators to enjoy great views and natural daylight, in an intimate environment. See https://linktr.ee/AlbinaCoInc for pictures, video and more!

For the roof, we rolled 600 lengths, varying from 28’-0” to 75’-6” long, of 14" OD X .375" / .500 WALL A500-18 GRADE B&C. That is 1,500,000# lot weight (750 tons) of rolled steel, 32 inbound trucks and 90 outbound trucks. The 14” OD material was laid over the top of the plate that we bent for this project. We bent 300 lengths, varying from 3’-0” to 37’-0” long, of PLATE 1½" THICK X 16¾" WIDE A572 GR. 50 and PLATE 1½" THICK X 10" WIDE A572 GR. 50.

In addition to the iconic roof, the tower at Hayward (187 feet tall) creates a community landmark honoring the first 100 years of track and field at Oregon. We rolled 400 lengths, varying from 20’-0” to 60’-0” long, of Tube Steel 8" X 4" X .500" WALL A500 GR B, 8-5/8" OD X .625" WALL A500C WHEELED, 8-5/8" OD X .375" WALL A500C WHEELED, 8-5/8" OD X .250" WALL A500C WHEELED, and Flat Bar 3/8" X 4½" A36. That is 330,000# lot weight (165 tons) of rolled steel, 10 inbound trucks and 16 outbound trucks!

Our work was extremely precise, and we had zero rejected parts by the fabricator, Fought & Co., Inc. When measuring the work points during fabrication, they never once had to heat up or adjust the bending. To make the erection process go smoothly, we marked every 3-4 feet on the centerline back of the pipe to assist in the layout process for the diagrid “fish-mouth” stubs, and up-stands for the roofing system.
