Curved Steel Everywhere you Look in Seattle!

We spent this last weekend in Seattle as we took our son and some friends up to a Mariners game. We had Saturday morning to spend in the city, and everywhere we looked, we stumbled upon projects containing curved steel that we have been a part of! The Jimmy Hendrix Museum, The Spheres and Spiral Staircase at The Spheres, the New Spiral Staircase in the Space Needle, the Canopy at the Seattle Great Wheel, the Dale Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum, the pedestrian bridge at the Museum of Flight, and art projects outside of corporate offices. The list goes on! What a true experience to see Brian showing the kids all of the curved steel projects Albina has done over the years! It was a great teaching moment to explain how the entire process works from the beginning of a project to the end and how all the different players work together to accomplish one final product. We were extremely proud to be the steel bender of choice for these amazing projects in the Pacific Northwest. And stay tuned, there are great things happening in the PNW and many more high profile projects coming up!

Another Fabricator Happy with the Quality of Our Plate Rolling!

Albina recently rolled ½" THICK A36 PLATE X 91" WIDE to create: 1 cylinder: 40" ID X 91" LONG 1 cone: 29" ID X 40" ID X 49.5" TALL Albina’s scope of work was to prebend, trim, roll, and tack weld per the drawings provided and turn it over to the fabricator for fabrication. After we completed the job, the fabricator had this message for us, "I just wanted to pass along the attached photo and compliment on the rolling you just did for us. The parts literally could not have fit better than they did which makes our job as fabricators so much easier. Please pass along a thank you to your team for another great job."

Curved Steel Canopy at "The Village at Medford Center" in Medford, Oregon

We recently completed a project consisting of 82,000# of bent steel for "The Village Medford Center" in Medford, Oregon. The Village is the center of a major environmental and architectural transformation at Medford Center, which is the premier entertainment-oriented shopping and dining experience in Medford, Oregon. Part of the architectural upgrades included a new dynamic sign program featuring an arched entryway with an illuminated pendant pine cone sculpture and a new 80-foot tall architectural tower, that will be visible from the I-5 freeway. We rolled 24 lengths of Tube Steel 16" X 8" X .500" WALL A500 GR B the Hardway to a 42 foot inside radius. All material was bent to AESS standards (without heat)! We also rolled 16 lengths of Tube Steel 6" X 6" X .500" WALL A500 GR B down to as tight as a 27 foot radius.

Meet Brian and Jaime Smith: It Never Hurts to Try Something New! We Aren't Afraid of a Little Adventure When It Comes to Our Business or Family Life!
We aren't afraid of a little adventure when it comes to our business or our family life! We recently took a family vacation to Central Oregon and went hiking and cliff jumping at Steelhead Falls! Our kids were eager to jump and even more eager to see us jump! I started with the lower rocks and worked my way up to the bigger ones. I couldn't let my son down! Jaime started on the lower rocks, and while she never made it up to the high ones, she found the courage to jump as our teenage daughter implored her by saying "Mom, I will be so disappointed in you if you don't jump." That was all it took and off she went! See our videos on YouTube. Brian is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x3pRl7Y9kM Jaime is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nwjR6TsDEI At times, we are not afraid to jump into something if the experience and adventure of it is worth it in the long run. I think that my grandpa had that same philosophy when he was hired at Albina 79 years ago. We hope to keep his spirit, as well as my father's spirit, alive in our future endeavors. We encourage and challenge you to try something new. If you haven't used us in awhile, or if you have never used us, please consider jumping in and giving us a chance to show you what we can do. We are up to the challenge!
Curved Steel Beer Taps at 10 Barrel Brewing in Bend, Oregon
Curved Steel Beer Taps at 10 Barrel Brewing in Bend, Oregon

We were recently floating the Deschutes River in Bend, Oregon and after a day of fun, we decided to go grab lunch and cool beverage at one of our favorite locations, 10 Barrel Brewing. As we looked at the menu, and admired the new remodel of the restaurant, we noticed the beer taps! We recently bent 1-1/2” OD x .065 wall T304 Stainless steel #4 finish. These are 90 degree bends on a 2-3/4” Center line radius. How exciting to see our work on display at such a hip location on Galveston Street!

Curved Steel Roof Structure Creates Key Architectural Feature of "Serenity" Carmel, CA. Home

$11 million Carmel, California 'Serenity' house for sale! Back in 2012, Albina bent wide flange W12 x 30#, W12 x 26# and W12 x 50# to help create the amazing exterior of this home. We bent 42 pieces the hardway to various radii as tight as 116 feet. The 2667 square foot home sits atop a cliff in Carmel, in central California. The exterior takes inspiration for its curves from the butterfly. The curved steel of the exterior has a unique effect on the interior spaces, making for interesting corridors and seating areas. I have several images of the project in process below, and I am working on securing the listing images and will post them as soon as I can. Until then, click on the following link to enjoy looking at the stunning images of a Butterfly-Inspired House on the California Coast!

"Meandering River Bridges" with Curved Steel Structures Highlight Phase 1 of the Newberg/Dundee Bypass in Oregon
"Meandering River Bridges" with Curved Steel Structures Highlight Phase 1 of the Newberg/Dundee Bypass in Oregon

Phase 1 of the Newberg/Dundee Bypass road in Oregon includes more than ten bridge structures, where the bypass crosses over creeks, wetlands, railroads, or travels over or under other local roads. The Corridor Theme is “Meandering River and Rolling Hills.” The theme includes an open form for bridge structures, which allows views for drivers under the structure and provides opportunities for smooth transitions into the surroundings. A “meandering river” concrete relief is stamped into the concrete railing and an ornamental “rolling hills” design is used where screening is required. That is where we come in! We rolled various tube steel to create the “rolling hills” on the bridges. We rolled: 16 lengths of tube steel 10" X 4" X .375" WALL A500 GR B (30 pcs total) bent the hard way to 15 different radii from 9 ft to 158 ft. 9 lengths of tube steel 12" X 8" X .375" WALL A500 GR B (16 pcs total) bent the hard way to 5 different radii from 28 ft to 58 ft. 19 lengths of tube steel 3" X 3" X .313" WALL A500 GR B (56 pcs total) to 26 different radii from 5 ft to 200 ft.

6" Pipe Bends for Steel Rings Displayed at Hulu Convention

We recently bent 6" SCH10 A53A ERW rolled to a 4’ 0” radius. We were instructed to bend the material in 180° sections and the customer was then going to make them into full circles. It is our understanding that these rings will be hung from the ceiling, painted and wrapped in ribbon for a Hulu convention. 6" pipe bends for Hulu</a

Custom 12" x 8" HSS Spiral Stringer for Spiral Staircase in Utah

We recently spiral bent tube steel 12" X 8" X .625" WALL A500 GR B Spiral the Easy way to a 173” radius for a customer spiral staircase located in Utah. Square and rectangular tubing is also known as HSS (hollow structural steel). Albina has the ability to bend both square and rectangular tubing. For rectangular tubing we can bend both the easy way (against the weak axis) and the hard way (against the strong axis). We can even provide Multi-Plane bending where we are bending both the easy way AND the hard way. Albina is a unique shop in that we can bend very small square materials such as TS ½” x ½” x .049” wall all of the way up to very large materials such as TS 20” x 12” x .625” wall, which happens to be the largest size that mills produce. Albina actually has a larger capacity than TS 20” x 12” x .625” wall, which means we can bend materials larger then what the mills produce!
