How Does the Rotary Draw Bending Method Work and What Types of Products Can You Make?
How Does the Rotary Draw Bending Method Work and What Types of Products Can You Make?

Rotary draw bending is a cold bending method where the member is clamped to a rotating bend die and drawn around the bend die. The tailing tangent is held against the bend die by a pressure die, and the bend die rotates until the desired geometry is formed. A mandrel is often placed inside the member to restrain cross-sectional distortion during the bending process. Bends can also be formed with special draw-bending equipment where deformations are controlled by tensioning along the member axis. Rotary draw bending is commonly used to form small radius bends in smaller-size round, square and rectangular HSS members. Specific tooling is required for each member size, shape and bend radius; therefore, this method is best suited for projects requiring many identical bends. This bending method is primarily used in the machine and parts industry (Weisenberger, 2016) and for piping (Riviezzi,1984). The maximum degree of bend is 180°, but the minimum bend radii of round HSS is approximately 50% smaller than that of other cold-bending methods (Riviezzi, 1984). Have a need for consistent, accurate, and repeatable bent steel parts, hit us up today! We are standing by ready to assist!

WE GOT YOU A GIFT THIS YEAR! A NEW DAVI MAV K30 PLATE ROLL MACHINE: OPERATIONAL BY THE FIRST OF THE NEW YEAR!

The color of the season around here is Red! Usually you wouldn't want to have the color red associated with a small business (ha!), but the signature red color we are seeing a lot of this season is our new DAVI MAV Variable Geometry K30 2-1/2” x 10 ft plate roll! The machine arrived in our shop a few weeks ago and will be up an operational by 12/31! This is our gift to you as this machine will drastically increase our capacity for plate rolling and we are excited about the opportunity to bid your plate rolling needs!
The overall capacity for standard A36 plate is 10 ft x 2½”. For higher yield material (example 60 ksi) the machine can pre-bend and roll the following examples:

  1. 10 ft x 1 5/8″ thick to a 61″ outside diameter.
  2. 9 ft x 1 3/4″ thick to a 96″ outside diameter.

With 2019 wrapping up, we also wrap up our 80th year in business. What an amazing accomplishment. Most businesses are not fortunate enough to see this type of longevity. 2019 has been a strong year for Albina where we have seen our national “footprint” expand into states where we were not previously providing bent materials. I think it is safe to say that Albina has a presence in almost every state in the US, which is a tremendous accomplishment for a company that started as a small, local shop. We would not be where we are at as a company without the efforts and dedication of the Albina team who strive to exceed your expectations in quality workmanship, on-time delivery, customer service, communication, equipment and procedures. We are so very fortunate for the amazing customers and vendors we work with as well. You make coming to work every day a pleasure. We are looking forward to 2020 and all the new opportunities and unique jobs we hope to work on together!

Value Added Processes In Addition to Our Scope of Work

In addition to bending, Albina can assist its customers by providing added processes to materials we handle. Many value-added processes can be included with our scope of work allowing our customers to receive turn key parts. Whether the parts are rolled, or standard straight sections, we are here to help.  Albina has countless pieces of fabrication equipment allowing us to provide complete parts whenever required.  Our talented fabrication personnel and equipment can reduce a customer’s lead-time and overall cost by handling some fabrication processes in house.

Albina employs several full-time welders and fabricators that carry various welding certs from AWS to fit the various needs of our customers. Our fabricators can weld steel, aluminum, stainless and copper nickel materials. We have MIG, TIG and Stud welding abilities in most of these materials. In addition to being able to weld, our fabricators and equipment allow us to add production cut (CNC), precision CNC trim (saw or plasma), punch/drill holes, CNC plasma cut holes (round, square, diamond, triangle and oval), rollbead ends of round material, flare ends of round material (37° and/or 45°), cope (manually and CNC) up to 6” OD material, split and taper both wide flange and HSS sections, cope T,K and Y connections in round and square materials, and thread or tap items.

Albina continues to grow and evolve as a full-service shop.  We have invested in CNC technology over the years to provide repeatable quality parts. Many of the secondary processes we offer customers can be performed using manual processes (for smaller quantity runs) or CNC processes (for larger quantity runs).  We are constantly adding to our capabilities and capacities. Please contact sales or estimating if you have specific questions regarding our ability to assist with your next project.

If we can’t do it….we know who can.  The industrial area of Tualatin where our facility is located is home to many businesses that can assist with the needs of your project.  We have developed some very close-knit ties with local vendors allowing us to partner up and service all of your needs.  External services such as laser cutting, hot dip galvanizing, sandblasting, painting, powder coating and precision machining are all within a mile of our facility.

Custom Made 1940's Bending Machine Displayed On-Site at "The Smith-sonian" in Honor of 80 Years in Business!
Custom Made 1940's Bending Machine Displayed On-Site at "The Smith-sonian" in Honor of 80 Years in Business!

In honor of our 80th Anniversary, Albina has created a museum on site, called “The Smith-sonian”, which honors the family name and houses one of the first ever pieces of equipment that Albina owned and used to bend materials. John Smith, Brian’s grandfather, built the “Model-T” bending machine in the early 1940’s utilizing the transmission and differential from a “Model-T” Ford. This machine was used to roll/bend various materials such as pipe, tube, and square and rectangular HSS (hollow structural steel). The machine would pull material around a bend die resulting in a smooth radius finished good. The “Model-T” was in operation at Albina until the 1990’s when it was replaced by more efficient bending equipment. “The Smith-sonian” is ready for visitors. Stop by to see us! Cheers to 80 Years! Meet Brian and Jaime Smith-Our New DAVI Bending Machine is Rolling!
Meet Brian and Jaime Smith-Our New DAVI Bending Machine is Rolling!

This master bender machine offers the new and innovative iRoll camera system, allowing operators to view the part being bent compared to a radius template on the control screen. This is a new way to make quality and consistent parts. Another innovation with the master bender is the machine’s ability to “learn and remember” how different materials bend, where the rolls need to be positioned, and how much spring back is associated with a bend / material. This machine is a great fit for our shop, its size puts it right between our current Roundo R7 and R11 machines. Allowing us to reallocate work from two machines to three machines which should certainly help with our scheduling flexibility. The MCP30 will allow us to bend up to 8” x 8” angle, 9” square HSS, W16 the easy way / W12 the hard way and 14” Sch20 pipe / 12” Sch40 pipe.
