Transbay Transit Center Nearing Completion
Albina has been involved with the Transbay Transit Center construction project since late 2014. Construction of the Transit Center, whick will connect eight Bay Area counties and the State of California through 11 transportation systems: AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, Greyhound, Muni, SamTrans, WestCAT Lynx, Amtrak, Paratransit and California’s future High Speed Rail from San Francisco to Los Angeles/Anaheim. is currently underway. Construction is expected to be complete in late 2017. For the most recent phase of the project, Albina provided 48,000# of 4" OD X .125" WALL A513 and TS 8" X 2" X .250" WALL A500 GR B all bent to various configurations. To perform to the highest quality standards we sand filled some of the materials prior to rolling, which helped hold the original shop during the bending process. For more information on the project, please visit TransbayCenter.org.
Efficient Bending of HSS for Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis
Modern Steel recently interviewed our very own General Manager, Mark King, to help construct the recently published article "Above all, ART" that highlights the precise structural design and inspiring architecture of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis. As a bender/roller, we were involved early enough in the process that we were able to reduce complicated curves, simplify the steel bending and reduce significant costs. The canopy consisted of HSS 14" x 10" rectangular tubing bent in multiple planes (both the easy way and the hard way). An important highlight of the project was that some of the material that was bent in multiple planes was rotated off-axis by a slight amount, and the radius was large enough, that we were able to bend it cold, which is a faster process than hot bending. Rolled Steel Channel at The Great Park in Irvine, California
Albina Co., Inc. recently rolled 10,000 pounds of channel C15 X 33.9# A36 for The Great Park in Irvine, California. All of the material rolled with the flanges in and is architecturally exposed structural steel. The Great Park is a non-aviation reuse of the decommissioned Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro with a focus on sports, agriculture, and the arts. In 2017, two new construction projects were approved and consist of an ice facility and a sports complex. Albina has the ability to bend all mill supplied sizes of channel which includes C3x4.1# through C15x50#. 21,000 Lbs. of Steel Bent for Providence Medical Building in Medford, OR.
Albina Co., Inc. recently completed 21,000 lbs. of bent steel for a curved steel entry way and canopy at the Providence Medical Building located in Medford, Oregon. The bent steel material consisted of: Tube Steel 8" X 6" X .250" WALL A500 GR B Bent the EW to a 22 ft radius. Tube Steel 6" X 4" X .250" WALL A500 GR B Bent the HW to a 17 ft radius. Tube Steel 6" X 3" X .250" WALL A500 GR B 4 lengths bent the EW to a 23 ft radius and 4 lengths bent the HW to a 17 ft radius. Tube Steel 6" X 6" X .250" WALL A500 GR B Bent to a 44 ft radius. Updated Pictures of Curved Rectangular Tube Steel "Spheres" Covered in Glass
See below for the most recent pictures of the curved steel "Spheres" in Seattle, WA. 750,000# and 1,050 pieces rectangular tube steel bent the easy way and a portion bent off-axis. Almost 8 miles of welding work and grinding was avoided because of Albina's ability to bend a portion of the project. Almost NO correction was needed during fabrication or erection as the bends fit to the fixtures within 1/32nd of an inch! Partnership Health Plan of California Construction Project Required Bent Rectangular Tube Steel
Recently a customer approached us with a very difficult steel bending project and wanted to know if Albina Co., Inc. was able to perform the difficult bends. The steel bends were for the Partnership Health Plan of California construction project. Partnership HealthPlan of California has outgrown its current home and will add a new 104,000-square-foot office building that will sit next to its current headquarters on Business Center Drive. This project consisted of primarily HSS Rectangular Tubing. The largest tube measures 20” x 8” x .375” wall and the smallest measures 8” x 4” x .500” wall. Some of the lengths were bent the easy way while other lengths were bent the hard way. Utilizing our in-house developed internal support system we roll bent all of the HSS material without any heat and exceeded all of our customers quality requirements.
Bending BIG Beams for the Murray Amphitheater in Murray, Utah
Got big beams to bend? Look no further than Albina Co., Inc.! We are just finishing up a beam bending project for the Murray Amphitheater in Murray, Utah. Murray Arts in the Park provides a summer full of artistic entertainment. The evening subscription series usually opens in late May and runs through Labor Day in the Murray Park amphitheater. This project consists of 55,000# of bent wide flange the hard way. All wide flange beams were bent to a radius that is tighter than 100 ft. The list of beams consist of: W24 X 76# A992 W30 X 108# A992 W36 X 135# A992 W36 X 170# A992 Albina will not shy away from any work (within our capacity) because it might be difficult to bend. We thrive on the difficult projects that others can’t do! Stay tuned for final installation pictures.
Bridge Drain Elbows Often Required on New and Retrofit Bridge Construction
Not all bridges are designed out of bent steel, however, most bridges DO require bent components. One such component, required on both retrofit or new bridge construction, is what is known as a bridge drain elbow. Albina is bending 6” Sch10 material on a new bending machine with new bend tooling for a Caltrans project. The bridge drain pipes we are supplying are 52 pieces in total that we are bending to a 18” center-line-radius (a 3d bend) at 90°. We are working closely with our customer to meet the tight Caltrans delivery requirements for this project. Stay tuned for some images of this project!
Induction Spiral Bending at Albina
Albina was recently awarded the bending for the Segerstrom Center for the Arts located in Costa Mesa, CA. This project consists of 48,000# of bending out of TS 20" X 12" X .625" WALL A500 GR B (4 lengths x 48 ft and 3 lengths x 60 ft). All of this material is being bent with our in-house designed induction bending method. 30% of the parts will be spiral bent while the other 70% of the parts are being bent the easy-way to various configurations and radii. We are working to a critical ship date and will certainly deliver as promised.
Customer Needed Steel Bent on a Short Lead Time and Here’s How We Handled It
A loyal customer recently came to us with a scheduling problem. They needed 60,000# of structural steel and pipe bent in a very short period of time. Yes, our shop is very busy right now, but we needed to figure out a way to get this material bent and ready to ship. We modified our schedule, worked extra shifts and long days to meet the requirements for this job. We also procured the material for the project so our customer didn’t have to worry about finding the material. All 28 lengths were bent to various configurations each length varied from 20 ft long to 60 ft long. The largest structural member processed for this job was W18 X 106# A992 bent the hard way to a 150 ft radius. All materials were bent to AESS standards for the Mountain Park Church located in Arizona.
