Steel Solutions Help Launch Seattle's Space Needle Into the Future
Steel Solutions Help Launch Seattle's Space Needle Into the Future

Albina Co. Inc. bent the spiral staircases at the newly renovated Space Needle in Seattle, Washington. The Space Needle's rotating glass floor, dubbed "The Loupe", is located just below the open-air observation deck and Albina Co., Inc. was the steel bender/roller for the custom spiral staircases connecting the two areas. The stair centilevers off concealed supports, so the staircase appears to float above the glass floor below thus creating a very unique experience for the visitors.

Albina Co., Inc. bent 1" thick x 13 ¼" wide A572 GR 50 to yield three 180" pieces and three 144" pieces of rolled plate and 1" thick x 10-13/16" wide A572 GR 50 to yield one 80" piece of rolled plate. We also bent tube steel 10" x 6" x .625" WALL A500 GR B to a 11’ 6” inside plan view radius (the easy way).

More detailed information on the project can be found in the May 2022 Issue of Modern Steel

Updated Pictures of Curved Rectangular Tube Steel "Spheres" Covered in Glass
See below for the most recent pictures of the curved steel "Spheres" in Seattle, WA. 750,000# and 1,050 pieces rectangular tube steel bent the easy way and a portion bent off-axis. Almost 8 miles of welding work and grinding was avoided because of Albina's ability to bend a portion of the project. Almost NO correction was needed during fabrication or erection as the bends fit to the fixtures within 1/32nd of an inch! Curved Steel Bio-Spheres Take Shape in Seattle, WA.
The erection of the curved steel "Spheres" in Seattle, Washington was completed in April 2016. Over the summer, the team of contractors began the install of the glass enclosure over the steel bio-spheres. Check out the progression in the pictures below. As a reminder, Albina’s scope of work included approximately 750,000# and 1.050 pieces of rectangular tube steel bent the easy way and a portion bent off-axis. The material was bent to tight tolerances and bent to AESS standards. The amount of welds and grinding was significant, but thanks to Albina’s ability to bend portions of the project, a significant amount of welding and grinding was avoided. Almost NO correction was needed during fabrication or erection as the bends fit to fixtures (fabrication) within 1/32nd of an inch! Check back for more pictures as the project progresses! Customer Quote of Appreciation for Steel Bending Quality
We always love to receive positive feedback from our customers when we meet or exceed their steel bending and fabrication needs. Here is a recent quote of appreciation for some curved steel we provided for a project currently being erected in Seattle, WA. "I would like to thank you and your team for your efforts on making this project a huge success. Because of your great workmanship and detail to meeting such tight tolerances, everything is fitting up in the field with no problems. In fact most everything in the field is fitting to +/- 1/8”. The erector is 85% complete with the erection and they are hanging the steel 2-3 times faster than they had anticipated with no problems. That is phenomenal. The on-site welding inspector told us that he has never seen anything fit so well with no problems in his lifetime."
