New US Air Force Academy Visitors Center Set to Open in Early 2024
New US Air Force Academy Visitors Center Set to Open in Early 2024

Albina recently rolled 36 pieces of Tube Steel 6” X 6” X .375” WALL A500 GR C to AESS standards at radii ranging from 3’-9” – 24’-4” for the United States Air Force Academy Visitors Center. The visitors center is expected to open early 2024 and the 32,000 square-foot facility will include storytelling and high-tech exhibits reflecting the Air Force and Space Force missions as well as illustrating a day in the life of a cadet at the Academy.  The Visitors Center is viewed as more than a public entrance to the Academy, it is also a gateway to Colorado Springs. Six years in the making, the new area will also feature a hotel, retail space and office space.

Steel Tree-Like Columns and Curved “Steel” Branches Create a Biophilic-Inspired Archway Entrance for the Freyer-Newman Center at the Denver Botanical Gardens

Albina bent 40,000# of steel for the steel tree-like columns and curved “steel” branches that create the biophilic-inspired archway entrance for the Freyer-Newman Center at the Denver Botanical Gardens. Albina bent 60 pieces of W8 X 31# A992 the hard way to a full scale layout. We also bent Tube Steel 8" X 6" X .500" WALL A500 GR B the hard way and MC8 X 20# A36 the hard way. The Freyer - Newman Center is a LEED GOLD building, designed by Denver’s Davis Partnership Architects. The Center houses six classrooms; four galleries; new herbaria for vascular plants, mushrooms and slime molds; laboratories; a new library and a coffee shop. Steel Tree-Like Columns and Curved Steel Branches for the Freyer-Newman Center at the Denver Botanical Gardens

"Daunting Curves Ahead"- Article in O & M Metal Fabricator
"Daunting Curves Ahead"- Article in O & M Metal Fabricator

A recent issue of O & M Metal Fabricator Magazine, produced by NOMMA, features a case study written by Jeff Fogel with input from key members of the Albina Team, on the great spiraling feat it took to create the spectacular spiral staircase at the American Airlines Headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.

We spiral bent Tube Steel 16″ X 16″ X .625″ WALL A500 GR B bent down to a an 18 foot radius, using our induction heating process to create the spiral stringers for the staircase. In addition to the 16″ square, we produced another set of spiral stringers consisting of Tube Steel 14″ x 6″ x .625″ wall REALLY tight, exposed and bent to a 5′-6″ radius on a 45° pitch. These are the type of bends that ONLY Albina can do! The 1.7 million-square-foot complex, dubbed the “Trinity complex,” consists of four seven-story buildings. It cost nearly $300 million to build and houses over 6,500 employees. There were 10 tower cranes on the project and more than 1,000 construction workers on-site during the peak of the project. Albina recently bent 37,000# of HSS for the Living Waters Express Car Wash in Aurora, Colorado. The concept for the Living Water Express Car Wash was to design a building that resembled flowing water. For more info on the project go to https://linktr.ee/AlbinaCoInc . To help our customer achieve their goals, we bent various materials including:TS 10" X 2" X .250" WALL A500 GR B- 10 pcs bent the hard way

Curved Steel at our Nation's Schools & Universities
Curved Steel at our Nation's Schools & Universities

Boy how the tide has turned! No longer do I hear, “I don’t want to go to school today!” Instead I hear, “I can’t wait until we get to go back to school!” Kids across the country are gaining a new appreciation for how important it is to physically be able to enter their school buildings to learn. We have been very fortunate to be involved in a number of projects at schools across the nation including custom spiral and circular staircases, curved steel signs, curved steel artwork, curved steel canopies, and more!

Sometimes the Building Itself is Just As Interesting As What's Inside
Sometimes the Building Itself is Just As Interesting As What's Inside

Often times when you visit a museum, you are looking at the objects of historical, scientific, artistic or cultural significance on the inside of the building, but the BUILDING ITSELF is often very eye-catching, interesting and artistic as well! The same can hold true for your local amphitheater. Yes, you are there to focus on the band or production occurring under the amphitheater’s structure, but take a moment to also appreciate the structure itself.

Thanks to Viva Railings LLC (Photo credit & Glass/Railing Fabricator) we have received some final installation pictures of the circular staircase at the "Trinity Complex", home to American Airlines Headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. We spiral bent Tube Steel 16″ X 16″ X .625″ WALL A500 GR B bent down to a an 18 foot radius, using our induction heating process to create the spiral stringers for the staircase. Rolled HSS and Steel Angle for Fort Bliss Hospital in Texas
Albina has successfully completed bending various HSS and angle for the Fort Bliss Hospital in Texas. We induction bent and roll bent with internal support, materials to meet AESS standards. TS 16" X 4" X .500" WALL A500 GR B was induction bent to a spiral configuration down to a 29 ft plan view radius for the stringers. We also roll bent (with internal support) the same material, the easy way, down to a 29 ft radius for landing materials. Other materials required for this project included TS 10" X 4" X .375" WALL A500 GR B and 3" X 3" X 3/8" ANGLE A36. Just another project that proves distance is NOT a deterrent. If you want high quality bending, on-time, with great customer service, call us today!
Curved Steel Spiral Staircase at Tommy Bahama Waikiki, HI.
Albina recently bent very large HSS (Hallow Structural Steel) rectangular tubing 16" X 4" X .500" WALL A500 GR B for an elliptical staircase at the Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar at The Shops at Mauna Lani in Waikiki, Hawaii. Upon extensive review of the plans submitted to Albina for production, it was determined that some radius changes were required. Many of the original radii required were actually deemed “too tight” to bend. Original plans called for bends that were as tight as a 3’-8” Centerline Radius. To remedy this problem, Albina was able to provide suggestions and recommendations regarding the radii that we were able to successfully bend while maintaining a high level of AESS (architecturally exposed structural steel) quality. This was a unique project because the stringers, as detailed, included numerous different radii. Many stringers are designed with a single radius or just a few radii. This staircase was originally designed with such complexity that it would have been fabricated from 38 individually bent members. Albina’s suggestion to decrease the actual number of parts and instead “blend” some parts together helped simplify the bending process, and reduced the total number of full-penetration weld splices that customer would need to perform during fabrication. After much discussion, the staircase was redesigned, resulting in only 24 individual members (a 37% decrease in the number of bent parts and full penetration weld joints). These changes resulted in a quicker lead-time and a labor cost savings. After receiving the elliptical bends from Albina, the customer commented, "Albina worked with us on time frames and cost issues. Albina must roll these pieces perfectly or we can’t even attempt to get a finish product on this end. We are counting on these things being correct…period. Albina is not afraid to take the risk of rolling a radius that hasn’t been done before. I appreciate the consistent and un-prodded reports on job status and progression.” [caption id="attachment_711" align="aligncenter" width="300"]Curved Steel Staircase Tommy Bahama Curved Steel Staircase Tommy Bahama[/caption] [caption id="attachment_712" align="aligncenter" width="300"]Curved Steel Staircase Tommy Bahama Curved Steel Staircase Tommy Bahama[/caption]
