Spiral Steel Bending for University of Kansas Bridge
Albina really enjoyed seeing some of our valued customers at the NASCC trade show earlier in 2017. After the show Albina was asked to spiral bend some TS 20" X 4" X .500" WALL A500 GR B material! This very difficult material was successfully bent by Albina to a varying pitch over the entire length. This bending project was for the Cambridge North Bridge at the University of Kansas. This particular customer is located in Kansas. They know, if you want it done right, you call Albina. No matter how far away they are located.
Bridge Drain Elbows Often Required on New and Retrofit Bridge Construction
Not all bridges are designed out of bent steel, however, most bridges DO require bent components. One such component, required on both retrofit or new bridge construction, is what is known as a bridge drain elbow. Albina is bending 6” Sch10 material on a new bending machine with new bend tooling for a Caltrans project. The bridge drain pipes we are supplying are 52 pieces in total that we are bending to a 18” center-line-radius (a 3d bend) at 90°. We are working closely with our customer to meet the tight Caltrans delivery requirements for this project. Stay tuned for some images of this project!
Can Our Bent Steel Products be used for Post-Tensioning for Bridges?
While we would prefer a bridge to be constructed of mostly curved steel, steel can still add value in the construction of a concrete bridge. Post-tensioning is a form of "prestressing", meaning that the steel is stressed (pulled or tensioned) before the concrete has to support the service loads. A typical steel strand used for post-tensioning has a diameter of 15.7mm and a tensile strength around four times higher than an average non-prestressed piece of rebar. Albina completed a recent project consisting of 300,000# of 3-1/2"-5" OD pipe bent, cut, trimmed, weld marked and galvanized for thousands of pieces for a post tensioning piping (conduit) for a local bridge project. Our bent steel is then placed in a sheath or duct. This allows it to move as necessary when the tensioning force is applied after the concrete cures. The steel stretches as it is tensioned and it is locked into place, thus maintaining the force in the strand for the life of the structure. Curved Steel Bridge at the San Diego Zoo
Albina recently completed bending 16" OD X .625" WALL A500 GR B material for a new bridge at the San Diego Zoo.  A total of 24 lens x 48 feet weighing 118,350 pounds were required for this job.  Albina used a combination of induction bending and cold increment bending to complete this project to meet AESS standards. Radii on the projected ranged from a 20 foot center-line-radius to a 350 foot center-line-radius. We are not a stranger to bending bridges for California Zoos! Broadway Bridge Replacement Project- Albina Co., Inc. to the Rescue!
The newly renovated Broadway Bridge opened a few weeks ago in Boise, Idaho. The General Contractor determined, at the end of the project, that the detailer had left off a couple of pieces. We rolled and galvanized the steel and sent the finished product over night to meet the bridge opening requirements. Steel Supported Bridge at Universal Studios Hollywood
Albina recently completed 65,000# of bent steel  for a curved span bridge that connects Los Angeles' Metro Universal City City Red Line Station to Universal Studio Hollywood's Wizarding World of Harry Potter Attraction. Albina bent the following structural steel materials for the 400 foot, L-shaped bridge span bridge. 14” OD x .375” Wall bent down to a 60 ft radius 16” Od x .500” wall bent down to a 59 ft radius 17” Sch80 A106B smls bent down to a 59 ft radius 8.625” OD x .500” wall API-5L bent down to a 44 ft radius 8.625” OD x .625” wall API-5L bent down to a 202 ft radius The steel was fabricated by Thomson Metal Fab. South Reserve Street Pedestrian Bridge Crossing Features AESS Curved Steel
Albina shines on a steel bending project requiring material that isn’t a mill stocked or produced shape! A loyal customer out of Billings Montana contacted us to partner up on the South Reserve Street Pedestrian Crossing project. This project was unique as it required TS 18" X 18" X .625" WALL A588 CORTEN material that one couldn’t purchase from a mill. This tubing had to be fabricated from plate. Albina teamed up with a local forming partner in Tualatin, OR and had 60 ft lengths of plate formed in a press break and then welded to form this unique square tubing. After this material was formed and fabricated, Albina took over the steel bending portion of the job. We are curving 8 lengths x 60 ft long of this material to a 148’ 3” inside radius. All of the materials need to meet AESS (Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel) requirements. No challenge is too difficult for the experts at Albina! Curved Aluminum Span Bridge at Riverview Park
Albina Co., Inc. recently bent 40 foot lengths of tube steel 8" x 8" x .500" wall for the Riverview Park Aluminum Span Bridge located in Washington state. The steel bending for the span bridge consisted of rolling the material to a 209 foot radius. All of the tube steel was rolled to AESS (Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel) specifications. After the steel bending was complete, Albina's customer fabricated the bridge into 2 sections at 140 feet per section. Curved Steel Pedestrian Bridge Woodburn, OR.
Albina Co., Inc. recently bent various sizes of tube steel to help create a beautiful curved steel pedestrian bridge in Woodburn, OR. Materials we worked with: TS 4" X 4" X .188" WALL A500 GR B. 65 lengths rolled anywhere from a 30 ft radius to a 300 ft radius. TS 4" X 2½" X .188" WALL A500 GR B. 28 lengths rolled anywhere from a 30 ft radius to a 120 ft radius. TS 4" X 1½" X .120" WALL A500 GR B. 36 lengths rolled anywhere from a 30 ft radius to a 300 ft radius. Curved Steel Pedestrian Bridges
Architecturally designed pedestrian bridges and walk-ways are often erected at transportation stations, universities, museums, business centers, and state parks. Most often, these curved steel bridges are constructed of bent or rolled structural steel including, pipe, square or rectangular tube steel, channel and wide flange. It depends on the application, the load requirements the AESS (Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel) requirements, and fabrication specifications of the project to determine which type of structural steel will best fit the needs of the project.
