This year's NASCC Show: The Steel Show will take place March 22-24 in San Antonio, Texas at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Albina Co., Inc. recently bent various pieces of tube steel to form an eye catching curved roof structure for a religious building in Lodi, California. The material consisted of tube steel 16" X 4" X .500" WALL A500 GR B bent the easy way to a tightest radius of 9’ 6 1/8” centerline radius and tube steel 14" X 4" X .375" WALL A500 GR B bent the easy way to a tightest radius of 12’ 0 ¼” centerline radius. Albina Co., Inc. bent 36 pieces of 6 5/8" OD X .375" wall round steel tubing and 384 pieces of 6" SCH80 6061-T6 ALUM to create the unique shape for the Peterson Auto Museum in Los Angeles, CA. Albina cut, bent and trimmed all pieces per the provided drawings. While most of the bent material was covered with the "skin" of the building, the bent steel parts are what gave the museum its' unique shape and appearance. Albina Co., Inc. recently bent various sizes of tube steel to help create a beautiful curved steel pedestrian bridge in Woodburn, OR. Materials we worked with: TS 4" X 4" X .188" WALL A500 GR B. 65 lengths rolled anywhere from a 30 ft radius to a 300 ft radius. TS 4" X 2½" X .188" WALL A500 GR B. 28 lengths rolled anywhere from a 30 ft radius to a 120 ft radius. TS 4" X 1½" X .120" WALL A500 GR B. 36 lengths rolled anywhere from a 30 ft radius to a 300 ft radius. In honor of Veteran's Day, I thought I would share a PT-658 boat restoration project that Albina Co., Inc. participated in. Albina bends and curves steel parts used on locomotive frames, boat frames, deck rails and even components for homeland security helping to protect our docks and ports. One example includes, PT-658, the last remaining operable PT boat from World War II. Albina bent and donated 3/4" Sch40 Bare pipe bends to form a protective railing for the deck mounted guns and 5” OD x .120” wall stainless steel exhaust tubing for the Packard Diesel engines and 1/2” OD x .065” wall T304 stainless steel bends (coils) around the 5” OD stainless material to cool the extremely hot exhaust tubes. When people ask me what I do and where I work, I get excited to tell them the answer because it almost comes as a surprise when I describe what our company does. When I say, " I work for a steel bending and fabrication company" many people look at me inquisitively and ask "so what does that mean?" Since many of the products we make require someone to look above eye level, my common response is "next time you are outside, look up, look around, any time you see bent steel on a canopy, a roof truss, a store front...those are the kinds of things we make." Many people go as far as to comment, "I never really thought about the fact that the steel has to be bent somehow!" So next time you look up and see a curved steel structure, think of Albina. "We've Got You Covered!"

The bending portion of this project required very large HSS rectangular tubing to be bent consistently from piece to piece with little to no deformation. Albina bent 8 lengths of TS 20” x 12” x .500” wall A500 Gr. B, all over 70 ft long. Albina also bent 44 lengths x 60 ft and 23 lengths x 25 ft of TS 6” x 3” x .313” wall A500 Gr. B, this material was “double bent” the easy-way and the hard-way. Fought & Co., a structural steel fabrication shop located in Tigard Oregon, teamed up with Albina to successfully produce the required canopy. Albina was tasked with the steel bending while Fought was tasked with the fabrication. Albina recently published an article in Metal Architectural (click here to read) highlighting the Student Experience Center Curved Steel Canopy project.

When it comes to choosing which vendor you are going to use for a job, are you just buying on price? Please don't. There is a price, and an ultimate end cost for every job you do. Price vs. Cost The price of a competitor might be below ours, but when you add up all of the actual costs to receive and install the material, is there really a cost savings? If you chose the lowest price, you may deal with late delivery, poor quality or incorrect parts and a lack of or delayed communication. If you choose the lowest price, you will get what you pay for. Risk vs. Reward It might seem like a risk to purchase from a supplier that isn't the "lowest price." The rewards are greater than the risk.
