Modern Steel Magazine Highlights "The Madison Center" Curved Steel Features in June Issue

The Madison Center is a 530 foot tall, 36 story high rise office building in Seattle, Washington and is featured in the June edition of Modern Steel. Albina Co., Inc. was the bender/roller on this project and worked specifically on what is being called "The Great Room" which is a 45-foot tall steel framed entryway rotunda. Albina bent many material types for this project including tube steel 8" x 6" up to 12" x 12", 3" x 3" angle, W10 and W16 wide flange, 8" pipe and more. Check out the article for some more details on the architectural feat and some great pictures. We will be heading up to Seattle soon to get some pictures of our own to share. Stay tuned!

Curved Steel Gates at Chicago Cubs Spring Training Facility of Sloan Park
Curved Steel Gates at Chicago Cubs Spring Training Facility of Sloan Park

We spent Thanksgiving touring around the beautiful state of Arizona. We saw many of the beautiful sights in Sedona and even went to visit the Grand Canyon. One of the highlights of the trip was our stop at Sloan Park, home of the Chicago Cubs Spring Training. We were anxious to see the field, but equally as excited about getting some pictures of the 50,000 pounds of steel we bent for some custom gates that sit above the stands at the park. The gates hold the overhead field lights. We bent various materials for this project including: W6 X 15# A992. 80 pcs total. Bent the hard way to a 8’-9” radius. C6 X 8.2# A36. 42 pcs total bent flanges in to a 10 ft radius. WT8 X 18# A992. 4 pcs stem out and 6 pcs stem in bent to a 10 ft radius and to a 56 ft radius. TS 3" X 3" X .188" WALL A500 GR B. 30 pcs bent to a 4’-4” radius and 17 pcs bent to a 11’-6” radius. 4" X 3" X ¼" ANGLE A36. 20 pcs total. Some rolled leg in and others leg out. All pcs were bent to a 95 ft – 105 ft radius. 7" X 4" X 3/8" ANGLE A36. 7 pcs rolled leg in and 1 pc rolled let out. All pcs were bent to a 10 ft – 90 ft radius. MC6 X 18# A36. 4 pcs rolled the hard way to an 11 ft radius. TS 6" X 6" X .250" WALL A500 GR B. 3 pcs rolled to an 11 ft radius. 8" X 8" X ½" ANGLE A36. 3 pcs rolled let out to a 52 ft radius. Curved Steel Wide Flange Bent for Large Formwork & Scaffolding Application

We recently completed bending 3 lengths x 45 feet of Wide Flange W8 X 35# A992 Bent the easy way to a 16’ 6” radius. 120° of content. Albina rolled, trimmed, drilled and assemble complete the three lengths displayed in the front of these images. These large span bends were for one of the leading formwork and scaffolding companies in the construction industry.  Formwork and Scaffolding Wide Flange Formwork and Scaffolding Wide Flange

Albina bent 55,000# of wide flange W24 X 76# A992, W30 X 108# A992, W36 X 135# A992, W36 X 170# A992 for the Murray Park Amphitheater in Salt Lake City, Utah. Over a planning period that lasted several years, the city received input from patrons and citizens that focused on the needs and wants for improvements to the amphitheater. The largest improvement to the amphitheater was a curved steel roof over the stage and orchestra pit. “In the summer, we have microburst storms that roll in at around three or four in the afternoon and rain out events,” Sorenson said. “The stage can also get very hot, which limits what you can do in the afternoon. If we had a roof, we wouldn’t have to cancel. It would allow us to keep events running.” One of Albina Co., Inc.'s slogans over the years is "We've Got You Covered" and in this instance, we truly did! The wide flange was all bent the hardway to a radii range of approx. 90 ft – 100 ft. and it was all bending to AESS (Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel Standards). Curved Steel Roof Structure Creates Key Architectural Feature of "Serenity" Carmel, CA. Home
Curved Steel Roof Structure Creates Key Architectural Feature of "Serenity" Carmel, CA. Home

$11 million Carmel, California 'Serenity' house for sale! Back in 2012, Albina bent wide flange W12 x 30#, W12 x 26# and W12 x 50# to help create the amazing exterior of this home. We bent 42 pieces the hardway to various radii as tight as 116 feet. The 2667 square foot home sits atop a cliff in Carmel, in central California. The exterior takes inspiration for its curves from the butterfly. The curved steel of the exterior has a unique effect on the interior spaces, making for interesting corridors and seating areas. I have several images of the project in process below, and I am working on securing the listing images and will post them as soon as I can. Until then, click on the following link to enjoy looking at the stunning images of a Butterfly-Inspired House on the California Coast!

Need Curved Steel for a Bridge Project?
Bridge bending? Yes- we bend steel for anything, even bridges! In fact every month steel is leaving our yard for different steel bridge projects. We recently finished bending steel for two bridge projects located on opposite ends of the United States. The first project shipped to Maine and consisted of 12,000# of HSS (rectangular and square tubing). Sizes ranged from TS 8” x 8” x .375” wall to TS 14” x 14” x .375” wall. The second project located in California (a week later) was for 21,000# of W33 X 118# A992 bent the hard way. We can provide bending needs for east coast and west coast projects!
Curved Steel Wide Flange for the UC Health Highlands Ranch Hospital
Albina recently worked with a loyal customer out of Colorado on the UC Health Highlands Ranch Hospital. The new 85,000 square foot hospital is being built as a proactive approach to the projected 25%+ population increase by 2025 for this growing area of Colorado. Albina needed to bend and ship 40,000# of bent steel to meet a critical project schedule. Albina was able to finish and ship the project days before the required date, once again exceeding customer expectations! The materials on this project consisted of: W12 X 26# A992 W12 X 14# A992 W16 X 36# A992 W14 X 22# A992 W14 X 30# A992 W16 X 26# A992 W18 X 40# A992 W18 X 35# A992 All bent the Hard way!
We Can Split Any Size Wide Flange Into "T" and Straighten To Mill Tolerances
We can split any size wide flange into "T" and straighten, in our profile roll bending equipment, to mill tolerances. Albina recently split W8 X 24# A992 into 192 pieces of WT4 x 12#. After splitting we rolled stem out to a 35 ft radius. We also bent 96 pieces of 4" X 4" X ¼" ANGLE A36 to the same 35 ft radius (legout). All of the beam splitting and rolling was for a new City Office Building in Northern California. Rolled Steel for Unmanned Aircraft Hangar
We have all heard about drones and how they may play a role in our future. Like it or not, drone technology is getting better and better and the areas of the business sector where they can and will play a large roll in the growth and development of certain areas of business. Albina has just finished rolling 50,000# of steel for a new UNMANNED AIRCRAFT HANGAR. For this project we rolled 6” angle, square tubing 3" x 3" and 6" x 6", as well as wide flange ranging from W8# to W18#. Stay tuned for some installation pictures in the near future.
