"Meandering River Bridges" with Curved Steel Structures Highlight Phase 1 of the Newberg/Dundee Bypass in Oregon
"Meandering River Bridges" with Curved Steel Structures Highlight Phase 1 of the Newberg/Dundee Bypass in Oregon

Phase 1 of the Newberg/Dundee Bypass road in Oregon includes more than ten bridge structures, where the bypass crosses over creeks, wetlands, railroads, or travels over or under other local roads. The Corridor Theme is “Meandering River and Rolling Hills.” The theme includes an open form for bridge structures, which allows views for drivers under the structure and provides opportunities for smooth transitions into the surroundings. A “meandering river” concrete relief is stamped into the concrete railing and an ornamental “rolling hills” design is used where screening is required. That is where we come in! We rolled various tube steel to create the “rolling hills” on the bridges. We rolled: 16 lengths of tube steel 10" X 4" X .375" WALL A500 GR B (30 pcs total) bent the hard way to 15 different radii from 9 ft to 158 ft. 9 lengths of tube steel 12" X 8" X .375" WALL A500 GR B (16 pcs total) bent the hard way to 5 different radii from 28 ft to 58 ft. 19 lengths of tube steel 3" X 3" X .313" WALL A500 GR B (56 pcs total) to 26 different radii from 5 ft to 200 ft.

Curved Steel for the Fort Worth Multi-Purpose Arena in Fort Worth, Texas
We just finished a project for a new customer out of Texas. Albina Co., Inc. provided 40,000# of bent steel for the Fort Worth Multi-Purpose Arena project in Fort Worth, Texas which broke ground on April 18th. Albina provided 28 pieces of spiral bent Tube Steel 8" X 4" X .500" WALL A500 GR B the easy way to AESS (Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel) standards. The tightest section was bent to a 17 foot radius. The Fort Worth Multipurpose Arena will be a 14,000-seat, multipurpose venue owned by the City of Fort Worth. The state-of-the-art arena, scheduled to open in November 2019, will host concerts, sporting events and family entertainment, and will be the new home to Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo performances.
Steel Bending Complete for the LAX Midfield Satellite Concourse North Expansion
Albina has finished the steel bending for the new LAX Midfield Satellite Concourse North Project. This project was part of an estimated $1.2 billion dollar modernization program at Los Angeles International Airport. Albina partnered with Schuff Steel and we bent over 1.2 million pounds of curved HSS (Hallow Structural Steel) as well as structural steel members for the project. This project consisted of various structural shapes and sizes and resulted in 0% rework. The steel bending was done over 7 months and we were able to meet or exceed all of our customers scheduling requirements. The satellite concourse will be a remote facility initially served by an airport busing operation and a passenger access tunnel (PAX) connection to the Bradley West Terminal. The new MSC will permit greater flexibility in scheduling improvements at other facilities, reduce reliance on remote gates, and ensure a high level of service for LAX passengers. Bending BIG Beams for the Murray Amphitheater in Murray, Utah
Got big beams to bend? Look no further than Albina Co., Inc.! We are just finishing up a beam bending project for the Murray Amphitheater in Murray, Utah. Murray Arts in the Park provides a summer full of artistic entertainment. The evening subscription series usually opens in late May and runs through Labor Day in the Murray Park amphitheater. This project consists of 55,000# of bent wide flange the hard way. All wide flange beams were bent to a radius that is tighter than 100 ft. The list of beams consist of: W24 X 76# A992 W30 X 108# A992 W36 X 135# A992 W36 X 170# A992 Albina will not shy away from any work (within our capacity) because it might be difficult to bend. We thrive on the difficult projects that others can’t do! Stay tuned for final installation pictures.
Induction Spiral Bending at Albina
Albina was recently awarded the bending for the Segerstrom Center for the Arts located in Costa Mesa, CA. This project consists of 48,000# of bending out of TS 20" X 12" X .625" WALL A500 GR B (4 lengths x 48 ft and 3 lengths x 60 ft). All of this material is being bent with our in-house designed induction bending method. 30% of the parts will be spiral bent while the other 70% of the parts are being bent the easy-way to various configurations and radii. We are working to a critical ship date and will certainly deliver as promised.
Customer Needed Steel Bent on a Short Lead Time and Here’s How We Handled It
A loyal customer recently came to us with a scheduling problem. They needed 60,000# of structural steel and pipe bent in a very short period of time. Yes, our shop is very busy right now, but we needed to figure out a way to get this material bent and ready to ship. We modified our schedule, worked extra shifts and long days to meet the requirements for this job. We also procured the material for the project so our customer didn’t have to worry about finding the material. All 28 lengths were bent to various configurations each length varied from 20 ft long to 60 ft long. The largest structural member processed for this job was W18 X 106# A992 bent the hard way to a 150 ft radius. All materials were bent to AESS standards for the Mountain Park Church located in Arizona.
Can Our Bent Steel Products be used for Post-Tensioning for Bridges?
While we would prefer a bridge to be constructed of mostly curved steel, steel can still add value in the construction of a concrete bridge. Post-tensioning is a form of "prestressing", meaning that the steel is stressed (pulled or tensioned) before the concrete has to support the service loads. A typical steel strand used for post-tensioning has a diameter of 15.7mm and a tensile strength around four times higher than an average non-prestressed piece of rebar. Albina completed a recent project consisting of 300,000# of 3-1/2"-5" OD pipe bent, cut, trimmed, weld marked and galvanized for thousands of pieces for a post tensioning piping (conduit) for a local bridge project. Our bent steel is then placed in a sheath or duct. This allows it to move as necessary when the tensioning force is applied after the concrete cures. The steel stretches as it is tensioned and it is locked into place, thus maintaining the force in the strand for the life of the structure.
