Spiral Staircases at the Newly Renovated Space Needle
Spiral Staircases at the Newly Renovated Space Needle

Albina Co. Inc. bent the spiral staircases at the newly renovated Space Needle in Seattle, Washington. The Space Needle's rotating glass floor, dubbed "The Loupe", is located just below the open-air observation deck and Albina Co., Inc. was the steel bender/roller for the custom spiral staircases connecting the two areas. Albina Co., Inc. bent 1" thick x 13 ¼" wide A572 GR 50 to yield three 180" pieces and three 144" pieces of rolled plate and 1" thick x 10-13/16" wide A572 GR 50 to yield one 80" piece of rolled plate. We also bent tube steel 10" x 6" x .625" WALL A500 GR B to a 11’ 6” inside plan view radius (the easy way).

VERY TIGHT Spiral Stringer!

The Albina Co., Inc. team recently spiraled a true HSS stair stringer to a very tight configuration for a spiral staircase project in Washington. The project consisted of using an induction heat source, on our custom made bending equipment, to spiral bend tube steel 16" X 12" X .625" WALL A500 GR B the easy way to a 77” Center Line Radius. VERY TIGHT and VERY IMPRESSIVE! Great work team!

The 1.7 million-square-foot complex, dubbed the “Trinity complex,” consists of constructing four seven-story buildings. It will cost at least $300 million to build and will house over 6,500 employees. There are 10 tower cranes on the project and there will be more than 1,000 construction workers on-site during the peak. It is scheduled to open during the second half of 2019.  These are the type of bends that ONLY Albina can do!

Spiral Rolled Plate for Spiral Staircase in Multi-Million Dollar Luxury Home on Green Street in San Francisco, CA.

We recently spiral rolled 1/2" and 1" plate for a custom spiral staircase in a multi-million dollar luxury home on Green Street in San Francisco, California. We provided the rolled plate for the staircase and then flat plane rolled the plate for the landings. The tightest radius was a 29.75” center line radius. Albina recently used our induction heating process to spiral bend Tube Steel 16" X 16" X .625" WALL A500 GR B bent down to a an 18 foot radius for the new American Airlines headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. Including the 16" square, we have produced another set of spirals and have one in the queue. The one in the queue is Tube Steel 14" x 6" x .625" wall REALLY tight, exposed and bent to a 5'-6" radius on a 45° pitch. We already made a mock up for the job and all parties loved it. These are the type of bends that ONLY Albina can do! This is a really amazing project! Stay tuned for more pictures. Curved Steel Spiral Stair Stringers at Suffolk County Community College
Suffolk County Community College (SCCC), recently opened its new $30 million, 75,000 square foot Learning Resource Center (LRC) and library on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood, Long Island, New York. Albina Co., Inc. bent the steel spiral stringers for the project. The steel spiral stringers consisted of spiral bent tube steel 20" X 4" X .500" WALL A500 GR B the easy way to a 14 ft. plan view radius. We also bent the landings to a similar radius. We also spiral bent tube steel 14" X 10" X .500" WALL A500 GR B the easy way to a 19 ft. plan view radius and the landings also to a similar radius. Curved Steel Spiral Staircase at Tommy Bahama Waikiki, HI.
Albina recently bent very large HSS (Hallow Structural Steel) rectangular tubing 16" X 4" X .500" WALL A500 GR B for an elliptical staircase at the Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar at The Shops at Mauna Lani in Waikiki, Hawaii. Upon extensive review of the plans submitted to Albina for production, it was determined that some radius changes were required. Many of the original radii required were actually deemed “too tight” to bend. Original plans called for bends that were as tight as a 3’-8” Centerline Radius. To remedy this problem, Albina was able to provide suggestions and recommendations regarding the radii that we were able to successfully bend while maintaining a high level of AESS (architecturally exposed structural steel) quality. This was a unique project because the stringers, as detailed, included numerous different radii. Many stringers are designed with a single radius or just a few radii. This staircase was originally designed with such complexity that it would have been fabricated from 38 individually bent members. Albina’s suggestion to decrease the actual number of parts and instead “blend” some parts together helped simplify the bending process, and reduced the total number of full-penetration weld splices that customer would need to perform during fabrication. After much discussion, the staircase was redesigned, resulting in only 24 individual members (a 37% decrease in the number of bent parts and full penetration weld joints). These changes resulted in a quicker lead-time and a labor cost savings. After receiving the elliptical bends from Albina, the customer commented, "Albina worked with us on time frames and cost issues. Albina must roll these pieces perfectly or we can’t even attempt to get a finish product on this end. We are counting on these things being correct…period. Albina is not afraid to take the risk of rolling a radius that hasn’t been done before. I appreciate the consistent and un-prodded reports on job status and progression.” [caption id="attachment_711" align="aligncenter" width="300"]Curved Steel Staircase Tommy Bahama Curved Steel Staircase Tommy Bahama[/caption] [caption id="attachment_712" align="aligncenter" width="300"]Curved Steel Staircase Tommy Bahama Curved Steel Staircase Tommy Bahama[/caption]
Rolled Plate Creates Spiral Stair Stringers
Albina Co., Inc. recently rolled steel plate to create the spiral stair stringers for a beautiful custom curved steel staircase in California. The plate sections consisted of 1/2" x 14" A36 plate rolled counter clockwise to a 38' 8" radius and 43' 9" radius. For portions of the landing area, 1" X 14" A36 plate was rolled anywhere from a 37' 7" radius to a 42' 6" radius. Various other structural steel members were bent including 4" X 4" X ¼" ANGLE A36 rolled legout to a 37' 6" radius. Spiral Bending of Structural Steel is a Booming Market
Why Choose Albina as your Spiral Bender?
  • Albina doesn’t split HSS prior to bending and then weld the sections back together to meet your needs, our HSS members are bent as HSS members.
  • Albina doesn’t fill your HSS with other structural members. We are able to bend HSS members without adding extra material and weight and are still able to meet or exceed your quality requirements.
  • Albina will bend your HSS stringers out of HSS material, we don’t make "built up stringers" out of plate.
Recently Completed or Active Projects:
  • Spiral bent some ½" X 12" A36 Plate down to a very tight 1’ 9” Inside Radius.  The bend was so complex that the customer didn’t think it was possible to spiral bend the material.  In fact, the customer thought we had rolled cylinders and laser cut out the spiral sections.
  • Just received another difficult Spiral bending project for some ½" X 14" A36 Plate.  All material is to be bent to AESS standards, down to a 5’ 0” inside radius.
  • Just spiral bent a project including stringers, handrails and mid-rails complete.  The stringers were spiral bent out of C15 x 40# down to a very tight 5’ 2” plan diameter.
  • Albina just finished another staircase project consisting of stringers and railing.  The stringers were bent out of MC12 x 10.6# channel and bent to a 78” plan view radius.
  • We were recently awarded a project to spiral bend TS 14" X 14" X .500" WALL A500 GR B material.  Project is located in the Mid-West and is all AESS quality standards (bent down to a 22 ft. radius).
