Handrail Kits: A Great Compliment to Spiral Stringers and Staircases
In addition to spiral stringers and spiral staircases, Albina Co. Inc. now offers handrail kits. Albina will bend and trim handrails per your drawing, mid-rails can be trimmed and coped, and assemblies can be supplied as individual parts or fabricated complete. We recently provided a very large handrail kit consisting of 1-1/4" Sch40 A53B and 1" Sch40 A53B bent to a 3" centerline radius and the mid-rails were trimmed, miter-cut and coped per the customers specifications.
Structural Steel Bending for the Oregon State University Student Experience Center
Albina is providing 62,000# of  79' lengths of TS 20" x 12" x .500" wall A500 GR the Hard-way to a 101'-8" radius for a spiral staircase at the Student Experience Center at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR. Albina is also providing 69 pieces of TS 6" x 3" x .313" wall A500 GR measuring 66' long for the project as well. Installation pictures coming soon!
Spiral Bending of Structural Steel is a Booming Market
Why Choose Albina as your Spiral Bender?
  • Albina doesn’t split HSS prior to bending and then weld the sections back together to meet your needs, our HSS members are bent as HSS members.
  • Albina doesn’t fill your HSS with other structural members. We are able to bend HSS members without adding extra material and weight and are still able to meet or exceed your quality requirements.
  • Albina will bend your HSS stringers out of HSS material, we don’t make "built up stringers" out of plate.
Recently Completed or Active Projects:
  • Spiral bent some ½" X 12" A36 Plate down to a very tight 1’ 9” Inside Radius.  The bend was so complex that the customer didn’t think it was possible to spiral bend the material.  In fact, the customer thought we had rolled cylinders and laser cut out the spiral sections.
  • Just received another difficult Spiral bending project for some ½" X 14" A36 Plate.  All material is to be bent to AESS standards, down to a 5’ 0” inside radius.
  • Just spiral bent a project including stringers, handrails and mid-rails complete.  The stringers were spiral bent out of C15 x 40# down to a very tight 5’ 2” plan diameter.
  • Albina just finished another staircase project consisting of stringers and railing.  The stringers were bent out of MC12 x 10.6# channel and bent to a 78” plan view radius.
  • We were recently awarded a project to spiral bend TS 14" X 14" X .500" WALL A500 GR B material.  Project is located in the Mid-West and is all AESS quality standards (bent down to a 22 ft. radius).

Early Involvement Benefits
Important message for steel fabricators, architects, engineers and project managers involved with projects requiring curved steel applications..."Using a third-party bending firm, and getting them involved early on in the design phase, allows you to take on bigger projects and offer more options to your customers."

If you bring a third party bender into partnership with you, do it as early into the project as possible.  When designs are challenging, it is best to have your bending firm examine the bending design ahead of time so that they can identify potential issues and determine whether or not the desired outcome can be achieved.  All parties involved must agree on all of the critical elements of the project before a single piece of steel is bent.  Early involvement eliminates potential mistakes or misunderstandings later in the process, which could potentially result in scheduling delays or added cost for re-work.

Albina Pipe Bending Co., Inc. wrote a case study on Early Involvement and their experiences with working with Columbia Wire & Iron on the bending and fabrication of a spiral staircase and landing at the Allison Inn in Newberg Oregon.  See pages 26-28 in the January/February 2012 Issue of Fabricator http://issuu.com/fabricator/docs/jan_2012_fabricator for more information and details.
