Boy how the tide has turned! No longer do I hear, “I don’t want to go to school today!” Instead I hear, “I can’t wait until we get to go back to school!” Kids across the country are gaining a new appreciation for how important it is to physically be able to enter their school buildings to learn. We have been very fortunate to be involved in a number of projects at schools across the nation including custom spiral and circular staircases, curved steel signs, curved steel artwork, curved steel canopies, and more!

“We have to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles and work. Or waffles, friends, work. But work has to come third.” Leslie Knope Parks & Recreation Quote Ha!
Todays Highlights: Curved Steel in our Parks & Recreational Facilities
Albina recently bent 8 Pieces of 6″ Sch80 pipe bent to 90°+ on a 5 foot radius to help create a beautiful canopy for the San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church in Alamo, CA. The curved steel pipe pieces provided the structural supports for the overhead canopy. The San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church is located in Alamo, CA.
The college tours continue and a few weekends ago, we had the pleasure of visiting Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon and seeing the curved steel canopy at the Student Experience Center.
The project was bent out of TS 20″ X 12″ X .500″ WALL. Bent the hard-way to the tightest radius of 101′-8″ inside. Always fun to see our handy work in person!
Albina recently bent various materials including tube steel, flat bar, pipe and angle for the Calvary Chapel in Ontario, Oregon. The Calvary Chapel is right on the Idaho border. Our bent material helped to create a lovely curved steel canopy for the chapel.
Materials Bent Include:
TS 10″ X 3″ X .375″ WALL A500 GR B (7 lengths x 48 ft- bent the hard way to a 66 ft radius).
FB ½” X 4″ A36 (2 lengths x 20 ft- bent the hard way to a 66 ft radius).
8″ SCH40 A500 GR B (1 length x 42 ft).
TS 6″ X 2″ X .188″ WALL A500 GR B (5 lengths x 48 ft).
1″ X 1″ X ¼” ANGLE A36 (6 lengths x 20 ft).
Sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction, the Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel (IDEAS2) recognizes projects where structural steel has been utilized in an innovative manner. We have been an integral part of many award winning projects, but this year, our curved steel was featured on the award-winning project of the UC Davis Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art.
In honor of this years award winners, the AISC produced a high quality coffee table flip Book of the winners. The UC Davis Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art is featured on pages 39 and 40 Feel free to check out the whole book to see the entire list of winners.

Overview of Curved Roof Structure
We spent this last weekend in Seattle as we took our son and some friends up to a Mariners game. We had Saturday morning to spend in the city, and everywhere we looked, we stumbled upon projects containing curved steel that we have been a part of! The Jimmy Hendrix Museum, The Spheres and Spiral Staircase at The Spheres, the New Spiral Staircase in the Space Needle, the Canopy at the Seattle Great Wheel, the Dale Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum, the pedestrian bridge at the Museum of Flight, and art projects outside of corporate offices. The list goes on! What a true experience to see Brian showing the kids all of the curved steel projects Albina has done over the years! It was a great teaching moment to explain how the entire process works from the beginning of a project to the end and how all the different players work together to accomplish one final product. We were extremely proud to be the steel bender of choice for these amazing projects in the Pacific Northwest. And stay tuned, there are great things happening in the PNW and many more high profile projects coming up!
