Transbay Transit Center Nearing Completion

Albina has been involved with the Transbay Transit Center construction project since late 2014. Construction of the Transit Center, whick will connect eight Bay Area counties and the State of California through 11 transportation systems: AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, Greyhound, Muni, SamTrans, WestCAT Lynx, Amtrak, Paratransit and California’s future High Speed Rail from San Francisco to Los Angeles/Anaheim. is currently underway. Construction is expected to be complete in late 2017. For the most recent phase of the project, Albina provided 48,000# of 4″ OD X .125″ WALL A513 and TS 8″ X 2″ X .250″ WALL A500 GR B all bent to various configurations. To perform to the highest quality standards we sand filled some of the materials prior to rolling, which helped hold the original shop during the bending process. Efficient Bending of HSS for Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis

Modern Steel recently interviewed our very own General Manager, Mark King, to help construct the recently published article “Above all, ART” that highlights the precise structural design and inspiring architecture of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis. As a bender/roller, we were involved early enough in the process that we were able to reduce complicated curves, simplify the steel bending and reduce significant costs. The canopy consisted of HSS 14″ x 10″ rectangular tubing bent in multiple planes (both the easy way and the hard way). An important highlight of the project was that some of the material that was bent in multiple planes was rotated off-axis by a slight amount, and the radius was large enough, that we were able to bend it cold, which is a faster process than hot bending.

A Second Headquarters for Amazon?

Amazon may be exploring the option of a second headquarters somewhere beyond its current base in Seattle. Albina Co., Inc. was the AISC steel bender/roller on the most recent Amazon spheres in Seattle, Washington. Amazon told city planners they could spend up to $5 billion on the new site and hire up to 50,000, then gave cities and states just six weeks to submit bids. Curved Rectangular Tube Steel Bridge at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts

Segerstrom Center for the Arts, originally called Orange County Performing Arts Center, is a performing arts complex located in Costa Mesa, California, United States, which opened in 1986. Albina Co., Inc. recently completed rolling rectangular tube steel 6″ X 4″ X .250″ WALL A500 GR B bent the hard way to a 14’-3” center line radius. We are unique in how we bend square and rectangular (HSS) for a number of reasons. When we roll bend HSS we typically fill the material with mandrels, where we turn the hollow material into a solid. This helps minimize distortion without increasing the thickness of the material. Also during roll bending we use custom made radius corner tooling to match the radius corner of different thicknesses of HSS material. This match between tooling and material result in much higher quality bends. When we bend stringers for spiral staircases we do not fill the HSS material with permanent structural members to control distortion. Instead, we have developed methods to hot bend or induction bend HSS materials to a spiral configuration without filling the hollow part of the material. This unique process allows our customers to take HSS stringers for their staircases without added weight or inconveniences of filler materials.

21,000 Lbs. of Steel Bent for Providence Medical Building in Medford, OR.

Albina Co., Inc. recently completed 21,000 lbs. of bent steel for a curved steel entry way and canopy at the Providence Medical Building located in Medford, Oregon. The bent steel material consisted of:

Tube Steel 8″ X 6″ X .250″ WALL A500 GR B Bent the EW to a 22 ft radius.
Tube Steel 6″ X 4″ X .250″ WALL A500 GR B Bent the HW to a 17 ft radius.
Tube Steel 6″ X 3″ X .250″ WALL A500 GR B 4 lengths bent the EW to a 23 ft radius and 4 lengths bent the HW to a 17 ft radius.
Tube Steel 6″ X 6″ X .250″ WALL A500 GR B Bent to a 44 ft radius.

We Continue to Supply Bent Steel for the St. Alphonsus Project in Idaho

We continue to provide bent steel for the St. Alphonsus Medical Group – Emerald Clinic in Idaho. We recently supplied another 20,000# of bent steel for the St. Alphonsus project.
This phase of the project included:

2″ X 2″ X 3/16″ ANGLE A36

Tube Steel 8″ X 2″ X .250″ WALL A500 GR B

All of these materials were bent on our state of the art roll bending equipment in a cold state. Everything was provided to AESS standards.

See below for the most recent pictures of the curved steel bio-spheres in Seattle, WA. 750,000# and 1,050 pieces rectangular tube steel bent the easy way and a portion bent off-axis. Almost 8 miles of welding work and grinding was avoided because of Albina’s ability to bend a portion of the project. Almost NO correction was needed during fabrication or erection as the bends fit to the fixtures within 1/32nd of an inch!

New Spiral Staircase at Golden West College Huntington Beach, CA.

Albina is happy to be teamed up with a very loyal fabricator on the Golden West College Project located in Huntington Beach, CA. Construction of a new 51,969 square foot building at the center of campus will house all student services. A new spiral staircase with landings was required for the new building and the California fabricator new the best choice for this project was Albina.

This project required Tube Steel 16″ X 4″ X .500″ WALL A500 GR B material to be spiral bent for the stringers and also bent flat (the easy way) for the landing supports. The spiral staircase also required some smaller HSS square tubing for stringers and landings out of Tube Steel 6″ X 6″ X .625″ WALL A500 GR B. Everything on this project was bent to AESS standards.

Bent Steel Featured at the “Marketplace at the City” in Surprise, Arizona

Albina Co., Inc. is happy to be part of the “Marketplace at the City” project Surprise, Arizona. “Marketplace at the City” is a 26,000 square foot single-story property located in Surprise, Arizona. Surprise is the fastest growing city in Arizona. The project represents a new trend in the delivery of healthcare, which involves bringing medical services to growing communities and placing them in retail locations.

Albina Co., Inc. is providing approximately 20,000# of bent steel on this project consisting of Tube Steel 5″ X 5″ X .250″ WALL A500 GR B and Tube Steel 12″ X 4″ X .250″ WALL A500 GR B. A total of 46 pieces all being bent all to AESS (Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel) standards.

Induction Bending of Rectangular Tube Steel for New Additions at Olympic Towne Center in Gig Harbor, Washington

Albina is working on bending rectangular hallow structural steel for the Olympic Towne Center project in West Gig Harbor, Washington. The Olympic Towne Center development will boast 186,291 square feet of retail space and will anchored by a 65,000 square foot grocery store. This project requires Albina to bend some TS 12″ X 3″ X .375″ WALL A500 GR B rectangular tubing. Part of the project consists of spiral bent stair stringers, induction bent, down to an 6 foot plan view radius! This is a very tight radius for spiral bending HSS members. We are induction bending this material with our in-house designed induction bending method which will result in the highest quality spiral bends seen in the industry. We are also providing bends for the stair case landings. These bends are also down to a 6 foot radius and will all be provided to AESS quality standards.
