NEW- Ovality Calculator Now Available on Our Website

Ovality is simply how “out of round” a round material is. The new ovality calculator determines the % of ovality (i.e. the % the material is out of round).

All round material has a certain amount of ovality (even as straight material) nothing is PERFECTLY round, mills will produce material to an ovality tolerance. When bending round material, the material will slightly oval. The material theoretic OD, the wall thickness, the radius the material is bent to and the bending method (i.e. how is the material bent) will all impact the final ovality of bent round material. Customers that are using pipe for pressure retaining systems, heat exchangers, industrial applications, boiler tubes, etc. are all concerned about the ovality of round material after bending.

The ovality calculator is a great addition to our already vast offering of general bending calculators and spiral math calculators available online.

Albina Co., Inc. Provides End Users With Tools to Successfully Quote and Understand Their Curved Steel Project

Albina Co., Inc. provides a plethora of tools on their website to allow end users the ability to not only make important steel bending calculations with the bending and spiral bending calculators, but we also provide a number of conversion charts, weight and dimension grids and reference guides. We want the end user to understand what we are quoting, why we need the information that we do, how we quote and ultimately we want the end user to understand the nuances of using curved steel on a project.

We also provide calculators to aid in determining tangent materials and bend tolerances for different material types, sizes and bending processes. Visit our “Calculators” page to gain easy access to these tools. Bookmark the page for future reference!

Spiral Staircase for “The Hopservatory” at Worthy Brewing in Bend, Oregon

Albina Co., Inc. recently completed 14,000 lbs. of bent steel to create a beautiful spiral staircase at Worthy Brewing in Bend, OR. Bent steel materials for the project included:

MC18 X 42.7# A36 spiral bent lengths with flanges in and lengths with flanges out were bent down to a 9 ft plan view radius! Landing pieces were also spiral bent down to a 9’ 8” radius.

C15 X 33.9# A36 for the inside landings were spiral bent down to a 8’ 9” outside radius (plan view).

Bend, Oregon is located on the eastern edge of the Cascade Mountain Range along the Deschutes River and is a popular tourist town known best for the many outdoor activities offered and world famous micro-brews. Worthy Brewing Co. broke ground on Feb. 24, 2012 off U.S. Highway 20 on Bend’s east side — it’s Bend’s 1st east side brewery – and with a beer garden, hop garden, and Hopservatory. The spiral staircase winds up to The Dome at the top of the rotating Hopservatory where visitors can view the cosmic skies through an OGS 16” RC Reflector telescope.

Spiral Coils for Industrial Heat Exchanger

Albina spiral coiled ½” OD X .065″ WALL stainless steel tube heat exchanger for an industrial application. We were supplied with only the existing coil to reproduce from. The coils were bent in one continuous piece that spirals down on the inside and then steps out and spirals back over itself. The sheet between was not needed to complete the bends but was left in place to match the existing design.

Mobile Friendly Website Now Available!

In recent news, we released a “mobile-friendly” website ( that provides fabricators, architects, engineers and many more with vast interactive calculators, reference materials, and capacity charts to assist with all of their bending calculations and provide answers to their technical questions. The “mobile-friendly” site is completely responsive and is easy to use and navigate on your mobile devices as well as your desktop.

Albina Co., Inc. offers custom bending calculators designed to assist customers with required bending calculations, and to provide bending tolerances and tangent material requirements needed to accurately bid a job.

In addition to the general bending calculators, Albina also offers a Spiral Math Calculator to allow customers to enter known data for spiral stringers, automatically calculate Degree of Pitch and Arc Length, and save the calculated information in their files for future reference or submit a report directly to Albina Co., Inc. for a quote!  It is that simple.

Additional highlights include a virtual tour of the company, material capacity charts and bending profiles, brochures, technical articles, industry links and numerous work examples including professional photographs of installed projects and videos of actual bending processes. Albina has several easy to use forms for requesting information or for obtaining a quote.

Online ordering is also available through Albina’s site for Duct Systems and Component Parts and a secure login can be obtained to view pricing and place orders from your smart phone or desktop.

“The driving force behind releasing a new “mobile-friendly” website was to create a seamless user experience for our customers no matter what device they use to access information. We wanted to provide an informational tool rich with easy to read capacity charts and stunning visual images to give the user a quick view into our capabilities. We also wanted to provide accessible tools to assist users in their daily job functions.” –Brian Smith, President Albina Co., Inc.

Tools Used to Calculate the "Content of a Bend" When Working with Bent Steel

Albina has created four new calculators that can be used by general contractors, engineers, architects, students, fabricators, and artists to help end users quickly and easily generate solutions to some complicated formulas used when working with bent steel.

Have you ever wondered, “How much material do I need when bending to a specific
Degree and Radius?” You can now calculate your content of a bend (i.e. Arc) by plugging in your Radius and Degree of Bend…it is that simple.

Have you ever wondered, “How do I figure out a Radius of a bend?” This is a common question that bending companies are frequently faced with. You can now calculate your Radius with 2 different calculators. You just need to know your Chord Length and your Rise or an Arc Length and Degree of Bend. With either set of data you can easily generate your desired Radius.

Other calculators are available as well to calculate your Degree of Bend or your Rise.

Albina knows that many of you can “run the numbers” and come up with the solutions on your own, but we wanted to provide a forum to allow for the calculations to happen in one location AND allow you to spend more time on your job and less time on running calculations. This “Calculators Link” on our web site is just one of the services that you should expect from your bender / roller. It should make everyone’s lives easier that are involved in your bending project and should certainly improve the ease in which information is derived.

In addition to the calculations, we have included a graph that shows the different components of a curve. This may help answer any questions you might have regarding what the components are.

For additional information and a more in-depth description of terms used in these calculators, please refer to our Glossary of Terms.
