Efficient Bending of HSS for Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis

Modern Steel recently interviewed our very own General Manager, Mark King, to help construct the recently published article “Above all, ART” that highlights the precise structural design and inspiring architecture of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis. As a bender/roller, we were involved early enough in the process that we were able to reduce complicated curves, simplify the steel bending and reduce significant costs. The canopy consisted of HSS 14″ x 10″ rectangular tubing bent in multiple planes (both the easy way and the hard way). An important highlight of the project was that some of the material that was bent in multiple planes was rotated off-axis by a slight amount, and the radius was large enough, that we were able to bend it cold, which is a faster process than hot bending.

A Second Headquarters for Amazon?

Amazon may be exploring the option of a second headquarters somewhere beyond its current base in Seattle. Albina Co., Inc. was the AISC steel bender/roller on the most recent Amazon spheres in Seattle, Washington. Amazon told city planners they could spend up to $5 billion on the new site and hire up to 50,000, then gave cities and states just six weeks to submit bids. Albina Co., Inc. was the bender/roller for the Amazon Curved Steel Bio-Sphere buildings in Seattle, WA. Albina bent 750,000# and 1,050 pieces rectangular tube steel bent the easy way and a portion bent off-axis. Almost 8 miles of welding work and grinding was avoided because of Albina’s ability to bend a portion of the project. Almost NO correction was needed during fabrication or erection as the bends fit to the fixtures within 1/32nd of an inch! See the most recent article published in the Seattle Times.

Partnership Health Plan of California Construction Project Required Bent Rectangular Tube Steel

Recently a customer approached us with a very difficult steel bending project and wanted to know if Albina Co., Inc. was able to perform the difficult bends. The steel bends were for the Partnership Health Plan of California construction project. Partnership HealthPlan of California has outgrown its current home and will add a new 104,000-square-foot office building that will sit next to its current headquarters on Business Center Drive. This project consisted of primarily HSS Rectangular Tubing. The largest tube measures 20” x 8” x .375” wall and the smallest measures 8” x 4” x .500” wall. Some of the lengths were bent the easy way while other lengths were bent the hard way. Utilizing our in-house developed internal support system we roll bent all of the HSS material without any heat and exceeded all of our customers quality requirements.

Bending BIG Beams for the Murray Amphitheater in Murray, Utah

Got big beams to bend? Look no further than Albina Co., Inc.! We are just finishing up a beam bending project for the Murray Amphitheater in Murray, Utah. Murray Arts in the Park provides a summer full of artistic entertainment. The evening subscription series usually opens in late May and runs through Labor Day in the Murray Park amphitheater. This project consists of 55,000# of bent wide flange the hard way. All wide flange beams were bent to a radius that is tighter than 100 ft.

Curved Steel at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles

Albina is currently working on 130,000 pounds of curved steel for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures located in LA. Albina is bending Square Tube Steel 6″ X 6″ X .500″ WALL A500 GR B and Rectangular Tube Steel 7″ X 4″ X .500″ WALL A500 GR B (approx. 190 pcs in total to various radii and configurations). The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the world’s premier film museum and a cultural institution for Los Angeles and will provide a destination for tourists to celebrate the magic and imagination of Hollywood and the movies. LAX Midfield Satellite Concourse North Expansion

Do you like innovative and eye catching architecture? You should take a look at the new LAX Midfield Satellite Concourse North Project. This new project is part of an estimated $1.2 billion dollar modernization program at Los Angeles International Airport. The satellite concourse will be a remote facility initially served by an airport busing operation and a passenger access tunnel (PAX) connection to the Bradley West Terminal. The new MSC will permit greater flexibility in scheduling improvements at other facilities, reduce reliance on remote gates, and ensure a high level of service for LAX passengers.

Albina is partnering with Schuff Steel and is bending all of the steel for this project. There is over 1 million pounds of bent steel in this project consisting of curved HSS (Hallow Structural Steel) as well as structural steel members.

Curved Steel Roof Structure at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis

The Jan Shrem and Maria Maneeti Museum of Art at UC Davis opened in late November of 2016. Albina Co., Inc. was fortunate enough to be the designated AISC Bender/Roller on this project. Albina bent 38 lengths of tube steel 14″ X 10″ X .500″ WALL A500 GR B and 3 lengths of tube steel 14″ X 10″ X .375″ WALL A500 GR B for the complex project. All of the material bent the Easy Way, Hard Way and also compound bent the easy way AND hard way in the same length. The Fabricator on the project was Olsen & Co. Steel. SO-IL and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson designed a 50,000 square-foot permeable roof that covers both the site and the building. The canopy is composed of 910 triangular, honed aluminum infill beams. assembled in an intricate pattern, the structure seeks to evoke the patchwork texture and topology of the surrounding landscape. The canopy arcs as high as 34 feet on the freeway side, and dips as low as 12 feet at its front. The Museum is currently nominated for an AISC 2017 IDEAS2 Award.

NCSEA “Excellence in Structural Engineering” Rewards Petersen Automotive Museum Renovation

The NCSEA (National Council of Structural Engineers Association) 19th Annual Awards for Excellence in Structural Engineering were announced in September and featured in the December issue of Structure Magazine.  The facade system for the Petersen Automotive Museum Renovation was awarded Outstanding Project in the “special use structures” category.  The exterior of the building was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox as a series of freeform stainless steel ribbons flowing over the structure.  The ribbons are supported by treelike structures, bent by Albina Co., Inc., which were designed to resemble engine manifolds. This project faced many structural concerns and the design team was able to come up with a solution that met all the structural needs as well as meeting the architectural vision.
